About the Blog

Earth: Interpreted is a place for me to collect, organise and develop my thoughts on a range of subjects including religion, politics and economics. In other words, this blog is not for you; but you're very welcome to tag along.

It has been given five stars (by my mother), was described as "brilliant and thought-provoking" (by my reluctant but uncoerced girlfriend), and has won Blog of the Year consistently since its inception (as judged by some other equally unbiased source).

Nevertheless, it is — and can only ever be — a work in progress.

About the Author

After spending a not inconsiderable amount of time staring blankly at my computer screen, dissatisfied at my many attempts to write this page, I think you should know that I'm a chronic perfectionist. Consider yourselves warned.

I'm the Social Policy Officer at a Citizens Advice Bureau, where I also volunteer as a Generalist Advisor. My roles reflect, in reverse order, the twin aims of the Citizens Advice service:

  • to provide the advice people need for the problems they face; and
  • to improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives

Basically, my job is to use clients' experiences to inform wider research and policy analysis as a basis on which to campaign for change locally. I have particular interests in employment law, housing policy and the current reforms to welfare benefits.

About Citizens Advice

There are 394 Citizens Advice Bureaux across England and Wales and all are registered charities. Citizens Advice itself is also a registered charity, as well as being the membership organisation for bureaux. Together, they make up the Citizens Advice service.

The service provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities.

You can find key facts about the service, and view its latest impact report and social policy impact report.
